HOPEFULS beat a path to Weymouth Police Station for the chance to join the resort's thin blue line.

More than 30 people rolled up for the special constables' recruitment evening at the Dorchester Road station.

Divisional Officer Trevor Lewis, Weymouth's specials' chief, said: "It went very well and was the best one we have had so far.

"We had a good cross-section of people from across the community, from professional people to shop workers and a student.

"We told them about the role of special constables, their powers, duties and the training on offer.

"They took away information packs and application forms to fill in if they were interested in signing up."

Special constables are part time officers who support the main force during evenings, weekends and at special events.

Their jobs can involve anything from helping at road accidents, patrolling the town and issuing parking tickets to dealing with drunks, hunting burglars and arresting criminals.

Mr Lewis added: "Now we are waiting to hear back from people.

"Anyone else interested in becoming a special officer who didn't come to the recruitment evening should give me a call at the station."
