A NEW initiative has been launched to help people find work in Dorset.

The scheme, launched by the Employment Service, will target people out of work and those who are not using the Jobcentre to find employment.

It is feared that many people are missing out on jobs because they do not know how to find the best help.

And the Employment Service will also be talking to community workers across the county on how to help advertise the services on offer at Jobcentres for those who live in rural areas and cannot travel to or do not know where their nearest centre is.

Neil Symons, district manager for the Employment Service in Dorset, said: "The economy is looking good and there are lots of jobs available.

"I am just concerned that people in the community do not know just what Jobcentres can do to help them find work and, in some cases, exactly where their nearest Jobcentre is."

There are 14 Jobcentres in Dorset but most of these are in towns, which often makes access to them difficult for people living in isolated rural areas.

Mr Symons added: "Many people find it quite difficult to get to us so we are able to offer a telephone service where we can contact them regularly.

"They don't need to be registered at the Jobcentre to use this service.

"One call to the nearest office will be enough and trained staff will be able to take details of what sort of work and wage is wanted, where individuals are prepared to travel and hours available to be worked.

"From that, there will be regular contact when any suitable jobs are available and tips on job applications and interview techniques will also be on offer."

Lynda Evans, Dorchester Jobcentre manager, said: "Within the rural areas of Dorchester, my team and I are making contact with community representatives to find out the best way to promote Jobcentre services.

"We look forward to this new initiative and hope that community representatives will support us fully in the work we are about to begin."

All Jobcentres are listed in the local telephone directory and for the cost of a local call people can contact Employment Service Direct on 0845 6060234 for information.
