SPORTS students from Weymouth College are through to a prestigious national competition after sweeping the board at the regional finals. Local youngsters were on top form for the British Colleges Sport South West Championships with team wins in the volleyball and football tournaments and individual successes in the trampolining. Trampolinist Jamie Whitworth, 17, took first place in a competition staged at Yeovil, while his training partner James Bruce, 16, came third. The Blandford lads will now go on to represent the South West region in the national championships. Jamie has been a keen gymnast for the past ten years and has been a member of several national squads. He took part in his first trampolining competition just last year after taking up the sport for fun. He is confident of doing well in the British Colleges Sport nationals. James said he had learnt everything he knew about trampolining from Jamie. He added: "This was my first competition so I'm hoping to do better next time." Flying the flag for the girls was 17-year-old Rachel Taylor, of Portland, who scooped an individual win in the women's trampolining competition. She has been trampolining since she was ten and recommends it as a sport anyone can have a go at. "It's quite easy to pick up and great fun," she said. The College girls also did well in the volleyball and five-a-side football. Volleyball players Amy Birch, 19, Sonja Smith, 17, Leanne Masters, 18, Dora Hanman, 18, Jacky Pang, 17, Danielle Baker, 17, and Ellen Dewey, 17, achieved a convincing win. And Sonja, Leanne, Jacky and Danielle were joined by team mates Linsey Greet, 18, Leanne Stockley, 16, Rachel Martin, 16, and Caroline Frost, 18, to storm to victory in the football for the fourth year running. Other good results for Weymouth College included a win in the men's five-a-side football. Peter Conning, lecturer in sports studies, said he was very proud of his students. He commented that the girls in the football team had done particularly well as the championship was their only competition. "They've done well to win it without regular competition practice," he said. "A lot of them play outside college but even so to win four years running is pretty impressive. The college is building up quite a reputation at the championships." The national college championships are being held at Millfield School in Street, Somerset, on April 6 to 8 next year.
