A CLAMPDOWN on illegal parking in parts of Bridport's East Street has triggered calls for residents' permits.

And a petition is now being drawn up by Steve Wheeler, David Churchill and Gretchen Bolton, who all live in East Street.

Their move follows a meeting with the area's police chief, Inspector Tim Warren, and representatives from Bridport Town Council and West Dorset District Council.

"We need the support of 60 per cent of the people," said Mr Churchill.

But they have been warned that it could take anything up to a year to achieve.

Meanwhile, police will continue to enforce the hour limit for parking at the eastern end of the street. They are determined to clamp down on people who routinely park there for a longer period.

Insp Warren said: "It was a constructive meeting at the police station.

"They put across their views and the options were considered.

"They have agreed to pursue residents' parking through the democratic process."

He added: "I would support a residents' parking scheme providing it was supported by the majority of people in the area."

Mr Wheeler said they had been told that residents' parking permits would cost £54 for the first year and then £15-£18 for subsequent years. Businesses operating in the street would be entitled to buy two permits each.

The cost compares with a £125 per year permit for the nearest car park in East Street.

"We want something done about the parking," Mr Wheeler said.

"I totally agree with residents' permits and I think most will agree with it, but a year is too long. I think that's wrong. I would have thought they could have used some discretion."

He added: "It's not just our street, but other streets in the town like South Street. Maybe people there could come forward and request their own scheme."

Anyone who would like to support the petition or find out more can call in at Alan's Hairdressers or ring Mr Wheeler on (01308) 423739.
