FURIOUS Mel Machin has rubbished reports suggesting Cherries have not made contact with West Ham about keeping Jermaine Defoe at Dean Court as "absolute nonsense".

Machin was angry after reading a story on regional Ceefax yesterday which claimed "both Defoe and Bournemouth are thought to be keen on extending the deal but there has been no contact with the Hammers".

But Machin has played a major role in persuading West Ham boss Harry Redknapp to allow wonderkid Defoe to extend his stay with the club.

Machin said: "I don't know where they get these stories from, but I have been in daily contact with West Ham about trying to keep Jermaine.

"It is absolute nonsense to suggest that there has been no contact with West Ham and I am disappointed if any of our supporters saw the story because it is just not true.

"Harry knows the situation and we have been speaking every day. He knows we would like to keep Jermaine for as long as possible, but the lad has only been here for two weeks. He has only just turned 18 as well and there is a lot for him to consider."
