JOE Topp doubled his year's mileage in Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers' first reliability ride of the winter.

Topp, a partially-sighted newcomer who depends entirely on the back seat of a tandem for a ride, joined the Wheelers after meeting Steve Brown recently.

Brown was more than happy to offer Topp a ride and he saw it as an opportunity to raise money for the Bournemouth Society for the Visually Impaired.

Ben Saunders (Hargroves Cycles RT Trant) produced an unusual performance on his way to victory in the Wessex Cyclo-Cross League meeting at Bletchingdon.

He lapped every one of the other 33 competitors in the main race of the day, despite taking more than an hour to complete nine laps of the 1.18-mile course.

Dorset Rough Rider Dean Thorne was best of the rest after his team-mate Branton Roud increased his lead in the Under-12 League by winning his fourth race of the season.

The absence of a 12-hour time trial on local roads failed to affect the annual competition for the South of England Best All-Rounder title.

With any 12-hour performance becoming acceptable for this contest there were eight riders who completed the three qualifying distances and two of them won bronze medals in national championships.

They were new district champion Paul Rogers (VC St Raphael White Contracts) who was third in the 12-hour race and David Shepherd (Rother Valley CC) who topped 480 miles to take third in the 24-hour championship.

Steve Clark (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) led the local challenge to finish third, while his club-mate Barrie Stevens pipped Wessex RC veteran Fred Newton for seventh.

Another Jubilee Wheeler Philippa Brayford outpaced Jan Ostrom (Bognor Regis CC) for the women's title.

Wessex Cycle-Cross League results (Bletchingdon): 1 Ben Saunders (Hargroves Cycles RT) 10.6 miles in 1.7.17, 2 D Thorne (Dorset RR) @ 1 lap, 3 A Davidson (unattached), 4 T Burman (unattached), 5 P Scott (Swindon RC), 6 D Dowling (Farnborough & Camberley CC), 7 E Yarker (Didcot Phoenix), 8 C Waddup (Reading CC), 9 S Shellard (Oxonian CC), 10 G Booker (Oxonian CC).
