DOZENS of pensioners in Wimborne have been left devastated at news that their senior citizens club could fold.

George and Pat Chown announced this week they were giving up running the club after more than 20 years in charge.

And unless somebody comes forward to take over they say it will have to close at the end of October.

Around 60 pensioners currently attend the fortnightly get-togethers at the Allendale Centre, although in the past numbers have topped 100.

Mrs Chown, 74, the club's secretary, said: "My husband is 86, so we're both getting older and don't feel we can carry on any more.

"Our members are mostly in their 70s and 80s and none of them are really able to take on the job.

"It's not just about organising the fortnightly meetings, we also arrange holidays, day trips and speakers so it takes a lot of time.

"I think it's sad if it has to close but I do find some people's attitude frustrating. They seem to think that you wave a magic wand and everything will be sorted."

Tom Soulby, aged 100, who has been a member since 1979, said: "It's a lovely club and it will be such a shame if it closes. I know a lot of people are really upset.

"When it was my birthday they gave me a wonderful do.

He added: "We just want someone reliable to take it over - someone who is really interested in old folk."
