MATT Groves chalked up his 113th goal on his 300th appearance for Dorchester and then predicted that things will get better for the Magpies.

"I definitely think we have turned the corner now," said the 25-year-old former Portsmouth apprentice after the Magpies got their first home point of the season in the Conference South when they came from behind to draw

2-2 with mid-table Hayes.

"I haven't had a great start to the season and I think four or five of the other more experienced lads in the squad would probably hold their hands up and say the same.

"But we had a good first half against TeamBath last week and I thought we played pretty well today so I see no reason why we can't go to Yeading next Saturday and put in another good performance and nick a Cup win."

One of the big talking points among the fans was the Magpies two rejected penalty appeals - one in the first half when Glenn Howes was up-ended just six yards out and the other in the second when Groves himself looked to be brought down inside the area by Hayes goalkeeper Kevin Davies.

Groves thought both were clear-cut decisions.

"I had a good view of Glenn's and in my mind it was a cast-iron penalty," he said. "Even the Hayes defender who was marking me turned round to me and said 'How did he not give that?

"When their keeper brought me down I was just outside the six-yard box and going away from the goal towards the corner flag - but it was still a penalty. I saw the keeper coming and thought if I could nick it around him I was in. I just got there first and he definitely took my legs without getting the ball so it should have been a penalty."

Manager Mark Morris, who refused to comment on Bristol referee Keith Johnson's performance, said while he was happy to get off the mark at home there was still plenty of room for improvement.

"I thought we did a lot of stuff which was quite good but there are still some things which are a bit worrying," he commented.

"When they scored their first goal we

had two or three opportunities to

clear before Craig (Bradshaw) flapped at the cross and their lad had a free shot at the far post.

"For their second the whole defence, Craig included, should have made a more determined effort to clear the set-piece instead of giving the same lad a free header.

"There are still one or two performances at the back which are not quite good enough and that is something I will have to consider for next week after talking to Paul Morrell about the second team's performance at Westlands.

"But overall today was a step in the right direction and we have to keep working hard and build up our confidence little by little."
