SHAFTESBURY is celebrating after coming top of the poll in ITV programme The People's Millions.

Jubilant townspeople now have £50,000 to spend on their swimming pool - formerly a rundown facility which was under threat of closure just a couple of years ago.

Now, after a hard-fought campaign spearheaded by Cllr Pam Reynolds for a town trust to take it over, and this boost of £50,000, it looks set for success.

Mayor Cllr Janet Lowe said: "We're absolutely delighted. It will mean that we can go ahead and install the retractable dome over the swimming pool and make it a really top class facility."

There were many groups working for improvements in the town, she said.

"This is the first one that's come to fruition - it's a big turning point for Shaftesbury," Cllr Lowe added.

"And we have got the town centre enhancement that's ready to go forward.

"It's been a long haul.

"The swimming pool group would like to thank all the thousands of people who took the trouble to vote and the public for all the telephone calls and letters we have received.

"It's a real community project and it's wonderful," Mrs Lowe added.

Cllr Roger Sprosen said: "This bid led by Pam Reynolds has had the support of the whole town.

"On Wednesday, which was voting day, nearly every shop in the high street had a yellow notice with the (telephone) numbers asking people to vote.

"The high street is peopled today by smiling faces and the swimming pool group are very, very appreciative of all the support they have received from near and far."

Portfolio holder at the district council Michael Roake congratulated the swimming pool group.

"They have done a fantastic job," he said.

"They have done a lot of hard work and it's pleasing when they get a reward."
