CUSTOMERS are rallying round to support drivers whose business is under threat.

They have backed a campaign launched by private hire drivers in Weymouth against the rigorous enforcement of parking restrictions by council traffic wardens.

Drivers risk getting parking tickets because they often have to drop off or wait in restricted areas for their customers, many of whom are elderly or disabled.

John Sapsford and Mandy Fry of Fleetline, who are leading the campaign, are seeking a dispensation order from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council allowing drivers to wait on double yellow lines, and they now have the support of their local MP.

Loraine and Philip Brown, of Gloucester Lodge on the Esplanade, say private hire vehicles are a lifeline, especially as Mr Brown, 81, has mobility problems and needs a special frame to walk.

Mrs Brown, 76, wrote a letter of support to the borough council as she felt so strongly about the drivers' plight.

She said: "The drivers are so good to us and will help us with the shopping up to our flat and see that my husband gets up the stairs.

"But in order to help us they have to double-park and risk getting a ticket.

"We would hope the traffic wardens turn a blind eye."

Tony Williams, 85, of Chickerell Road, Chickerell, also relies on private hire cars to go shopping.

He said: "I often use a car to go to the shops, but I will insist that it waits for me.

"In Chickerell it is proposed to put double yellow lines outside the post office, so that's going to be a problem."

John Sapsford said customers had put their views forward to the council because they were so concerned.

He and Ms Fry are now collecting names for a petition which they will hand to councillors.

He said: "We just want to be able to do our job."

South Dorset MP Jim Knight, who met with drivers to discuss concerns, said: "I think it's important that private hire vehicles and taxis are regarded as part of our public transport system.

"We do need a common- sense solution which would acknowledge the difference between private cars and those vehicles which provide a public service.

"I'm sure that with a will, a solution is possible."
