ELECTION hopefuls engaged in a round of street politics as they came face-to-face with their constituents in Dorchester.

An inflatable lounge was set up in South Street for the West Dorset political candidates to come and be quizzed by the local electorate.

The event was organised by the Power 2010 campaign, a non-party political movement aimed a giving power back to the people.

The candidates enjoyed the chance to meet the public and address any concerns or issues.

Liberal Democrat Sue Farrant said: “It’s great fun, it’s a really good idea and it’s attracted people to stop and come and talk to us – that’s what it’s all about and something we are doing all the time.

“There were a lot of questions about the economy and the environment – those were the two main issues that came up.”

Conservative MP Oliver Letwin said he enjoyed a ‘healthy range’ of conversations with potential voters.

He said: “It was great, I do a lot of standing in high streets talking to people anyway.

“We had a lot of people and it’s always good to meet the electorate.”

Labour candidate Steve Bick added: “It’s been really good and it’s always good for politicians to meet the public.

“Various interested people have come forward and talked to all the politicians.”

UKIP’s Oliver Chisholm said: “It’s been very good, I’m pleased with it.

“Not as many people as I would have hoped have come but those who have came with a purpose and I hope I managed to convince a couple we are the way ahead.”

Susan Greene, from the Green party, said she was glad that Power 2010 had the chance to publicise its campaign.

She said: “If anything happens to improve democracy then the Green Party is fully in favour of it.”

Stephen Pratt, 34, from Bridport got the opportunity to put questions to Dr Bick.

He said: “I think it’s a very good idea and I think the candidates are more likely to come up with more honest answers in this kind of situation.”

Peter Morphew, 24, from Dorchester added: “It’s really refreshing that they are coming out to local communities and you get to see all the candidates together at once.”
