YOUNG volunteers played their part in the success of the Dorchester Festival.

Members of the Dorset v volunteers group worked with artist Peter Sheridan to create an installation for the African themed arts and music festival.

They also created costumes for a band on the African theme and acted as roadies and stewards.

Project worker Lorna Johnson said: “Peter Sheridan worked with group of young volunteers to create a visual arts installation.

“It was in the shape of a series of huge mobile letters designed around the African theme.

“Nearly all materials were recycled, including the wheels found by town crier Alistair Chisholm from some old shopping trolleys.

“Volunteers worked hard to cut, screw and paint the letters and then wheeled them in the parade and into pride of place in front of the stage in the Borough Gardens.”

The Dorset v costume factory created outfits for the Global street band using animal print and African fabrics.

Young volunteer Adrienne Moverley created the design before the outfits were sewn by Kirsty Hansel and teams from the Friendship Club and Weymouth College.

Lorna added: “Young people with different levels of abilities all worked together to pull these two projects off.

“The young volunteers also received praise from the festival organisers for being stewards at the festival and roadies for the bands.”

The five-day Dorchester Festival held over the bank holiday weekend.

There were drama performances and dance workshops as well as singers, dancers and street performers.
