The computer system (plus the programmers) that creates the road lay-outs cannot see the big picture – ie: Weymouth is a natural bottleneck (look at a map and stand back for a minute).
You could have 10 lanes leading to Weymouth and they would ALL meet and get stopped at Littlemoor lights, Chickerell Road lights, and Preston beach pedestrian lights (x3) – there are only two ways to Portland.
Boot Hill would need to demolish the houses south side, and Lanehouse would have to demolish the church and 10 back gardens.
The only way to keep traffic flowing is roundabouts which would save massive carbon emissions caused by un-green traffic stopping at the lights.
