VISITORS to Portland Castle will be able to step back in time this weekend as the attraction hosts a 1940s Day.

Military vehicles will make their way from Weymouth Pavilion to the castle tomorrow in an event to mark the launch of Veterans’ Aware-ness Week to remember servicemen and women.

Events are being held in Weymouth over the weekend including a beach assault tomorrow and the veterans’ parade and service of remembrance on Sunday.

There will also be stalls on the seafront for service charities including the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and the Vet-erans Agency Advice Bureau.

The vehicle convoy, which includes armoured cars, tanks and motorbikes, will arrive at the castle around 2pm.

People will be able to view the vehicles on display and chat to the crews who will be dressed in uniform and period clothes.

Portland Castle will be offering 1940s food from its café, including fruit cake, ham sandwiches and English tea.

There will also be the opportunity for families to get involved with code-breaking games and a paper plane-flying competition.

The castle’s visitor operations manager Mark Simmons said he was confident the event would be a great success.

He said: “The event commemorates Portland Castle’s involvement in the Second World War and we are thrilled to have the military vehicle convoy ending at the castle.

This will be the fourth year for the event and it’s always been a great success.

“There’s been a real mix of all ages and it’s nice to see grandparents looking at the vehicles right through to youngsters playing the games on the site.”

Portland Castle, built in the 1540s to protect against French and Spanish invasion, is one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal defences.

Nowadays, it provides a day out for visitors, featuring an audio tour which tells of the castle’s history.

Admission prices for the 1940s day are £4.20 for adults, £3.60 concessions, £2.10 for children and £10.50 for a family.
