A ‘PSYCHIC’ octopus born at Weymouth’s Sea Life Park has been making spookily accurate predictions about Germany’s World Cup matches.

Paul the psychic octopus has correctly foretold the result of all Germany’s games by choosing a mussel placed in one of two plastic boxes in its tank.

One box bears a German flag and the other the flag of the opposing team and whichever mussel Paul picks first is taken as its prediction.

Paul, who now lives at the Aquarium Sea Life in Oberhausen, Germany, correctly predicted that Serbia would win 1-0 against Germany in the World Cup group stage.

The octopus has also gone on to accurately foretell Germany’s subsequent victories against England and Argentina.

Weymouth Sea Life Park’s head of animal care, Fiona Smith, said Paul the octopus left the park for Germany around four years ago before he started making football predictions.

She added: “Octopuses are very intelligent.

“We equate their intelligence with that of a dog and they love problem solving and figuring things out.

“Paul is a common octopus, which is native to our waters, and I’m sure he’s been loving having his prediction boxes to play with.

“It’s an imaginative set-up and is quite clever really.

“Octopuses are much happier when they’ve got things to do.

“We give ours puzzles and obstacles to play with, which we call their toys, and they can include things like Lego and buckets and spades.

“They like to have things that they can move around.”

Fiona said staff at the park are now eagerly following Paul’s predictions online and may now have a flutter themselves based on his speculations.

She said: “He never made any predictions while he was living here but maybe he was waiting for a big event like the World Cup until he revealed his abilities.”

The only time Paul’s predictions have fallen short of the mark was two years ago, when he incorrectly speculated that Germany would beat Spain in the final of the Euro 2008 clash.

Spain went on to win the match 1-0 – something that is giving Germans a ray of hope after Paul predicted they would lose their next World Cup clash with Spain.

Germans are taking the octopus’s predictions so seriously that a national news channel has now set up a live video feed of its tank and has two reporters in place to comment on its predictions live.

Paul’s quirkily accurate predictions have not gone down well with everyone.

Argentinian chief Nicolas Bedorrou has been urging people via Facebook to capture and cook the octopus after it correctly predicted his team would lose its final clash with Germany in the quarter finals.
