THE VOLUNTEER GROUP were out around the village on Monday morning at the beginning of August to tidy up the already cleared areas that they had previously worked on by the Surgery, along the footpath beyond the village hall and an overgrown area of the stream past the church.

It is very encouraging to see more recent residents to the village and those who have lived in Portesham for many years coming together to clear and improve the look of the village so that we might all take a pride in where we live.

Thank you to all members of the group who have given of their time and energies (and some of it is really hard labour!) for the work done so far: it is appreciated.

  • ALL RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS are very welcome to come along to the next Village Café to be held on Saturday, August 14 from 10-12noon in the Village Hall.

The Volunteers will be organising this café and it promises to be different again with home made produce, bottle tombola and raffle.

The refreshments will include the usual café fare: tea, coffee and cakes plus bacon and sausage baps!

There will also be an update available of all work completed so far despite the dry weather, together with ideas for tackling some other areas of the village.

Any feedback and suggestions for future planning and planting would be very much appreciated.

If you would like to contribute any suitable seeds, bulbs and plants it can be collected by arrangement in the autumn.

Also additional volunteers would be most welcome, so if you have some spare time, even just an hour a month and would like to be involved, why not come along and see what you could do to help.

All funds raised at this café will be used to buy more wild seeds, plants and bulbs for planting in the village over the autumn, winter and springtime.

For any queries or contact number, please ring my number as above and I will pass on details to the organising group.

See you at the Café on the 14th!

  • THE VILLAGE CAFÉ held at the end of July was organised by the Men’s Section of the RBL and funds raised go to the Branch Chairman’s Fund/Poppy Appeal.

The morning was well attended, the library busy as usual, and the cake stall sold out very early after opening.

Also to tempt people to part with their cash for the Poppy Appeal was a well-stocked bric-a-brac and plant stall, plus an inviting number of raffle prizes on show.

These village cafes have really become a central meeting place for neighbours and friends, for making new acquaintances and new residents moving into the village and a popular event to be looked forward to every fortnight.
