GLAM rocker Alvin Stardust has been unveiled as an unexpected surprise guest at Weymouth Carnival.

The singer, who had a string of hits in the 1970s and 1980s including My Coo-Ca-Choo, will strut his stuff on a stage near the King’s Statue as part of the festivities on Wednesday, August 18.

A supporter of charities, Stardust has agreed to play for a fraction of what he usually charges and it is expected that he will mix with crowds on the day as well as sing his hits.

The carnival committee is introducing new elements to this year’s carnival as well as laying on traditional attractions.

They believe live music on three or four stages positioned at different points along the seafront from the Alexandra Gardens to the Pier Bandstand will prove a hit with crowds.

Members of the town’s Rotary clubs have taken over carnival organising duties and have arranged the return of motorised floats to the procession as well as plenty of other entertainment.

Stardust and his band are a late addition to the bill after Rotary carnival chairman Robert Sedgbeer heard him on the radio and decided to get in touch. Now in his 60s, Stardust – famed for performing in a black leather suit and gloves – continues to tour and has been recording new material.

Mr Sedgbeer said: “While we appreciate a lot of today’s kids won’t have heard of Alvin Stardust, many people out there will have, including those who come year after year to Weymouth Carnival.

“Alvin is a big supporter of charities and has worked with the Rotary Club before so he’s right behind what we’re doing here and is delighted to be playing. Getting a celebrity down to help promote the carnival will help to raise the profile and will help us achieve our aim of trying to raise as much money as we can for local charities.”

Radio station Wessex fm is putting together a programme of musical acts to play on carnival day.

The full line-up is yet to be confirmed but it is understood a steel band which has played at the Notting Hill Carnival will be among the performers.

If you are interested in performing on the day call carnival vice-chairman Shaun Hennessy on 07970 850068.
