TRANSPORT package bosses have admitted there is congestion but said the situation is being constantly monitored.

Weymouth Transport Package project manager Matthew Piles said: “We recognise that there are places on the network where there is congestion.

“However, during the summer Weymouth is congested. The aim of this work is to relieve it.

“We monitor the network 24/7.

“When the works started we opened up Hope Square to two-way traffic to ensure residents could still easily access the town and that business deliveries could operate as usual.

“However, since then we have witnessed inconsiderate parking causing unacceptable delays and have listened to concerns from public transport operators, local businesses and the public over pedestrian safety.

“As a result we have changed the traffic management to give local traffic a safer route.”

Mr Piles, pictured, said working overnight would cause too much disruption to residents.

“Because of the close proximity to homes we do not plan to work on the junctions overnight,” he said. “Normal working hours are from 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, depending on the type of work being done.

“If work is required on a Saturday, it will normally be from 7.30am to 1pm. Although working through the day and night would allow us to complete the junction works quicker, the noise and light from night works would make living conditions awful for local people.

“The current works on Boot Hill are being carried out by Southern Gas Networks, in advance of the Weymouth Transport Package. We are working closely with SGN so they can finish their work as soon as possible.”
