SWIMMERS are being urged to take part in the Weymouth Bay Swim this weekend.

Organisers are urging people to sign up on the day for the bracing mile-long swim across the bay on Sunday morning.

Proceeds are in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) but the aim is also to promote healthy lifestyles.

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the annual event – all with red caps from the BHF.

Hannah Townsend, BHF event organiser, said: “The Weymouth Bay swim is a really fun day out and a great summer activity to get involved in.

“Events like this raise vital funds that help the BHF continue its life-saving and life-changing work.

“By taking part you are looking after your own heart, as well as the hearts of the nation.”

A team of swimmers has already signed up to join in the swim.

Big Rick’s Swim Team have been up and down the country this summer swimming for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The group of friends are encouraging people to join in the one-mile swim on Sunday.

The team, made up of of swimmers from around the country aged between 13 and 50, have taken part in numerous events since they formed in 2008.

They have raised £7,000 so far for the cause.

They decided to raise cash for the charity in memory of their friend Mark Rickhuss who died of heart disease in 2005 aged 41.

Mr Rickhuss, who was an accomplished sea swimmer himself, was helping another swimmer complete a cross channel challenge when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Paul Bates, founding member of Big Rick’s swim team, said: “Mark was a larger than life guy in so many ways.

“He was a real star and we miss him every day.”

* The swim starts at 9.30am and registration opens at 8am.

The event is £5 for children and £15 for adults for those signing up on the day.

All participants will receive a free swim hat and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
