LUCKY April Spann will be travelling abroad for the first time when she goes on a top-of-the-range holiday she won at Weymouth Carnival.

April has enjoyed breaks before but they have always been on home shores.

She admitted to being ‘nervous but very excited’ about flying and leaving the country for the first time.

Competition organisers said April was a well-deserving winner.

The Thomson holiday, which is worth around £3,000, is a seven-night break for a family of four on a full-board ‘plus’ basis at the five-star Sensatori resort on Crete.

The holiday was offered after a businessman and Rotarian who has contacts with Thomson made inquiries about a prize for Weymouth Carnival.

Rotary Club organisers of the carnival were thrilled with the offer, which they advertised through the £3 souvenir programme.

To be in with a chance of winning the holiday people simply had to fill in their details on a coupon in the programme and drop it off at one of the stalls on the seafront. April’s name was read out at the end of the night – but she wasn’t around to hear it.

April, aged 41, of Norfolk Road, Westham, said: “I was in town for the carnival with my children and we had a great day.

“I didn’t hang around after the fireworks though because it was getting cold.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked when I heard I had won.

“I didn’t actually find out until a day or two afterwards because the organisers only had my email address and I didn’t think to check my computer straight away.”

She added: “It will be my first time abroad.

“I’ve never really had the opportunity before. We never went on posh holidays when I was young and when I got older my life was devoted to my kids.

“It’s really exciting. I can’t wait to go. The resort looks fabulous.”

April, who does voluntary work and is involved with a local Brownies pack, will be taking the holiday next May. Travelling with her will be her partner Andrew Rado, 47, daughter Jodie Edwards, 20, and son Craig Spann, 11.

Meanwhile Robert Thomson has taken receipt of the car he won as top prize in the Weymouth Carnival Draw. He is the new owner of a Mazda2 TS worth £9,820 from Wey Valley Mazda.
