Holidaymaker attacked by dog near Dorset travellers' site

A HOLIDAYMAKER was attacked by a dog as he walked past a travellers’ site in the Dorset countryside.

Grenville Paget, who lives in Hampshire, was out walking in woods near Tolpuddle with his wife Beverley when the attack happened.

The couple, who are touring the area in their caravan, got lost and came across a travellers’ site at Sares Wood. Mr Paget, who is aged 62, said: “The dogs were barking and we walked past one of them that was tethered.

“We stepped across to the other side of the path and thought that would be OK.

“But we didn’t realise it was one of those leads that extends and he’s leapt up and grabbed my leg.

“I’m actually alright now but I was very much in a state of shock.

“When the dog got me it was behind me and I didn’t actually see it go at me.”

Mr Paget suffered a puncture wound from the dog’s canine and several other cuts.

He said his leg was ‘streaming with blood’ as he managed to walk as far as Affpuddle, where a Good Samaritan gave him a lift back to his car at Tolpuddle.

Mr Paget then went to Dorset County Hospital where his wounds were treated and he received injections and antibiotics.

He said his wife believed the dog was a pitbull-type dog, although it could have been a crossbreed.

Mr Paget said he feared what could happen if young children were to walk past the site and encounter the dog.

He said: “Most of the dogs were on tethers that restricted them but this was unrestrained.

“If a family had been walking along there with a couple of kids it could have been a right mess.

“They wouldn’t have got away.

“They can keep the dog but they need to put it on a proper leash and keep it within their own patch, not so it can go across a public bridleway.”

The incident on Tuesday was reported to police, who are investigating the matter.

Inspector Les Fry, of Dorchester Police, said: “We are always concerned about this sort of attack by a dog when someone is going about their lawful business like walking in the woods.

“We will do all we can to make sure people are safe.”

Witnesses or anyone who can help identify the dog involved are asked to contact the officer in the case PC Paul Bessell at Dorchester Police Station on 01305 222222.

We had some of these so called "Pikeys" camp near us. I have to say that I found them very intelligent people unlike some who post on here (Not You Magura) The first thing the did after setting up camp was to hire a large skip from a local firm to put their rubbish in, all the dogs were tethered and secured, the famlies were polite and when they all eventually moved on you would neer havenown that they had been there. The next day W&P.B.C were there putting huge boulders along the site to stop entry

Magura, have you actually met any travellers? You do realise that many 'respectable' tax-paying citizens own dogs that attack people, horses and other dogs. It happens in Weymouth all the time - maybe Poole is different?.
Fancy emigrating to France? Sarkozy could do with your suport right now.

Dear Ms Janeausten If you have actually read my comments you would have realised that i am actually criticising the police in this case . I realise there are good and bad sections of the travelling community unfortuanately ,on our land we have only encountered the bad side which has cost us a lot of money in terms of theft , the clearing up of rubbish and human waste etc, so i cannot comment on the good people but will take Doughbun 1958 westons word on his experience .Thank you for your suggestion of emigrating to France but no thanks i find it hard enough to support my family here in dorset let alone a french regime .

My friends and I went for a walk in the same area a few years ago. We were unaware of any travelers until it was too late. We passed some caravans where dogs were tied up, but as we continued we came across another caravan/trailer. We heard the dogs before we saw them and these dogs were not tied/restrained at all. Two very angry dogs came at the four of us showing their teeth barking, jumping at us etc. There was no owner around or if there was they did not come to our aid. We were very lucky they didn’t bite any of us, I think probably because we kept calm (don't know how). At the time we were so relieved we didn’t have any children with us as it could have been a completely different story. I feel very sorry for anyone who has the misfortune of stumbling across this walk!! We would never return, to say my heart was in my mouth is an understatement! Absolute sympathy for Mr & Mrs Paget!

I would like to take this opportunity to defend the travellers at sares woods .
firstly it was my dog that bit Mr Pargett and i would like to apologise profusely to him and his family , my dog is not a pitbull breed , she is a terrier crossbreed, she has never bitten anyone before , it was the first time she has ever been tethered , that is no excuse for what she did , but in here defence she obviously didnt like being tied up , i dont know why she bit Mr Pargett , but i can guarantee it wont happen again.

my response to magura: firstly i think you may have us confused with other travelleing groups , we do not have expensive vehicles and the ones we do have are road legal , 80% of the occupants including myself have jobs , we pay tax and national insurance ,i have never sponged off the state , i hold a sia licence ,an alcohol licence , i have a certificate in pub management , and at the moment work full time in a supervisory positon within a company in dorset, my partner has very much the same qualifications as me , we are not pikies , gypsies or romany's . we are a peaceful group who mean no harm to anyone , the only thing that tars us with a few traveller groups that do cause trouble is ignorance.
if people really knew us , they would have a different opinion.
its so easy to jump on the hate bandwagon with all the other ignorant people.
we are not theives nor antagonists.
i found myself on the road through the recession , when i lost my job and my home , i had a caravan and knew one of the people who at the time were on a site in blandford, so i took the opportunity to move on , and since i have been travelling with this group , we haven't had any reasons other than routine for the police to visit us, we always leave the sites clean and tidy when we leave , we mean no harm to anyone , for the grace of god , if any of your family or friends found thereselves in this situation , would you still have the ignorant views towards them.
we are human beings.
i pay my way just like anybody else who is in employment .
please don't tar us all with the same brush.
one dark evening last year , two young ladies found themselves lost at sares wood , we offered them a hot drink and then drove them back to athelhampton house , where their journey had started , they were very grateful of our intervention ,so much so , they returned later in the week with a chritsmas hamper for us , we have directed and helped several people in the past , but no one hears about these incidents.
i again apologise to Mr Pargett and his family,i did notice he didnt slag us off in his interview with the echo.
please treat us as you find us ,dont treat us with ignorance . thank you for taking time to read ths.

Dear Travller, Affpuddle. You ask us to "treat you as we find you and not treat you with ignorance." We locals who ride horses, bikes, run and walk in OUR local woods regularly are completely fed up with you being there - This is, we believe, the 9th year out of 10. You and your friends have again made a large majority of the woods a 'no-go zone'. You may not think it, but your camp is very intimidating. When we are brave enough to go through, we encounter your tin cans strewn across the track to slow the Max Events traffic down, your poor tethered dogs, your rubbish in the hedgerows and outside your vehicles, electric cables running across paths and tracks - we recently even (very nearly literally) rode into an orange string washing line strung right across the top of a bridleway which comes out of the lower woods on to the main track. You personally may be the clean and considerate exception to the rule in your camp, but some of your neighbours are not so fastidious. Perhaps if you put something back into the woods - i.e filling in ruts or clearing fallen wood from the paths, we may feel slightly different towards your presence, but all we see is you ruining our enjoyment of the beautiful area we locals work very hard to live in. Please leave soon -Sares Wood has had enough or you now.

If it is mine, then you have gone down in my estimations. From your initial post I at least expected the courtesy of an intelligent response to my constructive critiscm of your campsite.... or have I hit upon the truth and you are embarrassed to reply?

no the comment wasn't meant for you i was referring to the pikey comment.
and im certainly not embarrased , the cans in the track are not to slow cars , but to be flattened and recycled,as we recycle most things, the power cables you refer are not across any track nor hinder anyone , i know nothing about a washing line.
if the council pulled there fingers out regarding resiting traveller's , we wouldnt have to live in these places, we realise the problems we cause by siting around forestry areas , but we have no where else to go . we dont go out to upset people, and yes your right some parts of the site do look messy , but we havent got sheds and garages so things tend to accumalate, but we are all making efforts to downsize and try and get rid of the scrap items.
the reason for the lateness of the reply is the fact i dont have broadband piped into my trailer.

So you are expecting our horses, or our mountain bikes or our feet to flatten your cans? We all recycle, so don't use the 'green' route as a cop out for your mess.
As for your power cables - they ARE across the tracks as we have ridden over them, and the washing line is real - I have pics of it on my mobile phone if you're interested, or maybe you should try walking around your 'village' and seeing these things for yourself.
If we all sat on our backsides and waited for the coucnil to sort our living accommodation out, we would be in a right mess - sort yourselves out. You do upset people, your camp is intimidating, you have allegedly caused criminal damage to a height restriction barrier, you have broken and entered on to private property, and you are living there illegally - how do you expect us to have empathy with you?
So when are you leaving Sares Wood?

travller says...

not private property, public highway , no police presence regarding barrier, and really do you think your going to entice me into a war on words , not likely , you live your way , we live our way. were not looking for empathy ,and we will be leaving when the court decides , we have already been to court once and got an extended stay,no more words from me.
