Arrest after crash in Weymouth FC car park

There were chaotic scenes after the Terras’ game on Saturday as police were called to deal with a disturbance in the car park at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Officers discovered someone had driven a car owned by match-day sponsor Joe Djeebet of Weymouth’s Windowman company into the side of a car owned by Terras’ midfielder John Litherland.

Thousands of pounds-worth of damage was caused.

Mr Djeebet and Mr Litherland said they were inside the club when it happened.

The drama came at the end of a home win for Weymouth when the Terras beat Bashley 2-1.

Weymouth Football Club director Mark Coleman said: “It was a great game.

“I don’t know what happened in the car park afterwards, I was in the office when it happened. We will be investigating.”

The damage to Mr Djeebet’s BMW M3 convertible and Mr Litherland’s Peugeot 206 was discovered after a screeching of tyres and a loud bang could be heard in the car park just after 6pm.

A group of men were seen running from the ground.

Police were quickly on scene and a man was arrested outside the ground on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

PC Nick Gravenor of Weymouth Police said: “The Peugeot was stationary and the BMW, which was being driven around the car park, collided with it.”

He said as far as officers could tell, the driver had permission to be at the wheel of the BMW – a fact disputed by Mr Djeebet.

Mr Djeebet said: “I was in the bar having a drink when I heard a commotion outside.

“I came outside and saw my car had been smashed up.”

Mr Djeebet said an estimated £3-4,000 damage had been done to his car.

Mr Litherland said: “I was inside when it happened. I came out and found someone had smashed into it.”

PC Gravenor said: “We have spoken to a number of people. Anyone who has yet to come forward who can help with our inquiries, we would appreciate them doing so.”
