THE Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, Councillor Paul Kimber, will be taking part in a ceremony to mark United Nations Day on Sunday.

The ceremony will take place at the Memorial Tree in Radipole Park Gardens at 10.30 am and will include the UN flag raising, followed by a celebration and recognition speech by the mayor and the President of the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club David Addy.

The anniversary of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.

It has traditionally been marked throughout the world by meetings, discussions and exhibits on the achievements and goals of the organisation.

Coun Paul Kimber said “As a representative of the Borough’s residents, I am delighted to have the opportunity to host this short ceremony in recognition of United Nations Day.

“The United Nation’s work reaches every corner of the globe.

“Although best known for peace keeping, peace building, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance there are many other ways that the United Nations affect our lives and make the world a better place.”
