ORGANISERS of this year’s Southill fireworks display are hoping to raise at least £1,000 for Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

Event leader Jon Gabb has been putting the finishing touches to his plans over the last few weeks.

He said he is now hoping for a bumper turnout at 7pm on Saturday to support the display and help it raise money for a local good cause.

Mr Gabb said: “Everything’s been going fine.

“I’ve picked up the last of the fireworks, including a few new ones for this year’s display, and spent about half a day planning the show.

“Now, I’m hoping for good weather and a good turnout.

“Weymouth Community Volunteers and a few friends of mine will be stewarding and St John Ambulance crews should be there for the event.”

Mr Gabb said he wanted to thank everybody who has helped him organise this year’s display, including his sponsors the John Gregory pub, Absolute Cooling Ltd, JD Yachts Ltd and dozens of other local firms.

He said: “I’m selling a 2011 calendar, with all proceeds from this and collections on the night, going to the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

“People can buy the calendar at the John Gregory and the Spa shop in Southill and via the contacts link at www.

southillfireworks. co.uk “We normally raise around £1,000 for charity through this event and I would be happy with that again, although I would be even happier if it was a lot more.”

Mr Gabb said there will be no fireworks display at Kingston Maurward College this year, so his display should be the biggest one in the area after Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s display on November 5.

This year’s Southill display is being held in the memory of John Badcock, the father of Mr Gabb’s friend Peter, who was a major supporter of the display in past years.

Mr Gabb also thanked his parents Jean and Maurice and is urging people to walk to this year’s event if possible, but if they must drive there, to park responsibly.
