AN ANGRY pensioner is calling for action to stop a building site and cars that ‘race’ past her home from affecting her health.

Lisa Field, 67, said the new fire station being built opposite her bungalow meant she had to clean and dust twice a day and that residents’ cars and police vehicles ‘raced’ past her home in Radipole Lane, Weymouth.

She said “The problem is the racetrack as we call it and we’ve got the fire station being built.

“And the police have their sirens constantly going.

“It’s getting worse with all the noise and police and building work so you feel like everything’s getting on top of you.”

Mrs Field suffers from Lupus disease – which affects her immune system and causes extreme fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches and anaemia.

She wrote to South Dorset MP Richard Drax to complain about the noise of the cars and the building site after noticing she was suffering more migraines.

She said: “I’m fed up with doing housework as I get all the dust and I don’t know why they are putting the fire station here with all the people living here.

“I’m angry. They should have put it next to the police station.”

Mrs Field said speeding motorists were a hazard when she tried to cross the road.

She said: “I nearly got knocked down and the language from this bloke was atrocious.

“He had to pull up very quickly.

“I said to him, ‘What are you doing, it’s not a race track.’ ”

Mrs Field – who is a retired phlebotomist who took patients’ blood samples in hospital – added: “I was getting migraines all last week and I couldn’t do anything.

“I wish I could hibernate for six months.”

* A spokesman for the developer of the fire station, Morgan Sindall, said the firm kept in contact with residents.

She said: “As a member of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme we are doing everything we can to minimise the impact of our works to local residents.

“We have monitored noise and dust to ensure they do not exceed standard levels.”

* A Dorset Police spokesman said public safety ‘is always of paramount concern’.

He said the drivers are highly trained and would drive proportionately to the incident they are dealing with.

In relation to speeding motorists on Radipole Lane he said: “Tackling speeding traffic along Southill Garden Drive and Radipole Lane is a priority for the local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

* THE site of the new fire station in Radipole Lane is believed by fire chiefs to be in the right place to help with response times in Weymouth.

Phil Head, district commander for Weymouth and Portland’s fire stations, wants to allay residents’ fears.

He said: “Firefighters are extremely sympathetic to local residents and always use their horns and lights very judiciously.

“We are also subject to the road traffic act and are not allowed to use our horns in any circumstance between the hours of 11.30pm and 7am.

“At the current Weymouth station, where we have been situated since 1936, we have received very few complaints about disruption to residents.

“If any residents are really concerned firefighters would be more than happy to come and visit them.”
