DORSET Police, trading standards officers and the Environment Agency are warning people to remain on their guard against rogue traders during the winter.

The authorities are warning that even though bogus tradespeople are seen to be more active during the summer months, they can strike at any time.

Dorset County Council principal trading standards officer Richard Herringshaw said: “Residents who have been a victim of a rogue trader should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

“They can be assured their report will be taken very seriously and they are not alone. We recommend that you take extreme care with traders that cold call.

“It is far better to use a business that has been recommended by a friend or a member of our Buy With Confidence scheme.”

The police and trading standards officers warn that those conducting distraction burglaries can be men, women, children or a combination and can be dressed either smartly or casually.

A genuine caller will happily wait outside while you check on them by calling their organisation from the telephone directory, not from the number they give, or contact a family friend or neighbour to assist.

If you suspect a bogus caller is at your door call 999 and do not open the door.

Rogue traders usually call at your door without an appointment and offer to do work which is either unnecessary or vastly overpriced. Never feel pressured into agreeing to have work done during a doorstep call as genuine traders will be happy for you to think about it, and always get several quotes before having work done.

If you suspect a bogus caller has been to your address, even if they have already left, call the police straight away on 01305 222222, Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
