Gerald Northover really has lost the plot ‘There’s a reason behind big move’ (Your Say, February 1).

The principal reasons behind the objections to the new council building were not just about economics, or more accurately the lack of them.

They were also to do with the destruction of the environment.

In case he hasn’t been listening to what has been going on, most of us don’t want The Walks destroyed and the character of the area maligned.

If it is so important to relocate WDDC then why not rent some of Prince Charles’s office space? There seems to be enough of it.

The addition of a library to the office was, I am sure, a way of trying to make it look as though money was being saved by WDDC.

In fact it’s the ratepayers who will be footing the bill since the contribution would come out of the DCC’s coffers.

We don’t need a new library in Dorchester. We already have one. There are probably a lot of other places in Dorset which will be losing library facilities. Think of them!

This whole episode has gained momentum because the council officers responsible for this fiasco have failed to address the arguments.

The whole project is shabby and uncertain and will put the county in even more debt.

When money is short, it is always the workers who make the sacrifices which cut services for those who need them.

As always, it is easier to forego the odd posh meal when times are lean but more difficult to sit in front of a one-bar electric fire with a blanket over your shoulders.

To those on excessive salaries, remember that charity starts at home.
