THE final touches are to be added to the £1million Wey Valley Tennis Centre at Easter.

More than 3,000 players have already played at the complex at the Wey Valley School and Sports College since January.

The project will reach its completion at Easter holiday as the colour court surfacing takes place next week.

Weymouth Tennis Club coach Julien Lawes will also be holding a tennis camp over the Easter holiday.

Rob Cole, who is school finance and business manager, said: “The school will hold an official celebration opening for the Wey Valley Tennis centre in May with the Lawn Tennis Association and other sporting associations and dignitaries to celebrate this fantastic facility, which has proved to be a great success already this spring.

“Over 3,000 tennis players have visited the tennis centre already since early January.

"Plans are in place to hold LTA regional competitions and special tennis events for local charities later this year as well as maintaining our commitment to have indoor tennis courts available for local tennis clubs and the general public.”

Mr Cole said that the school will be offering free tennis courts to the general public on Friday, April 29 between 10am and 7pm to celebrate the Royal wedding.

Wey Valley head Philip Thomas said: “The tennis centre is now a registered LTA Places to Play facility with courts available throughout the week for general play as well as coaching with Julien.

“The official launch in May will also coincide with the tennis centre achieving the prestigious LTA Clubmark award which acknowledges the excellent tennis development programmes in place, the liaison between the school and local tennis clubs and the professional set up in place between the school and the Redlands Community Hub.

Julien said that the Easter tennis camp will run from Monday to Thursday 9am to 2pm over both weeks in the Easter holidays for players aged four to 14.

It will take place in the tennis centre, sports hall and outside courts during the two weeks whilst court surfacing takes in the centre during part of the holiday break.

There is also the added opportunity for adult tennis training for beginners and improvers on Wednesday evenings between 8pm and 9pm.
