THE family of Ellie Hills are so grateful to the Portland Coastguard rescue heroes, who transported her to the specialist care she needed, that they are gearing up for an epic cycle ride to follow the life-saving flight path.

The seven-year-old was airlifted from Dorset County Hospital to a specialist children’s unit in Southampton in blizzard conditions this Christmas.

The family, led by grandad Ian Finney, four members of the coastguard crew and two intrepid Echo reporters are peddling around 70 miles on Saturday, April 23 from Portland Coastguard’s Osprey Quay base to Dorset County Hospital and then on to Southampton General Hospital.

Money raised will be split between a coastguard charity, Dorchester’s Kingfisher children’s ward, Southampton’s paediatric intensive care unit and a Meningitis charity.
