I was saddened to read of Simon Avery’s objections to a helicopter landing pad at the Southwell Business Park (‘We must reject heliport scheme’, Echo, April 5).

One of my companies, First Heli-Network Ltd had offices at the excellent Southwell site for many years up to about 2007.

On several occasions we flew helicopters in and out of the facility with absolutely no problems whatsoever and we did so under the guidance and laws established by the Civil Aviation Authority.

Simon comments on the point about engine failure and people on the ground being at risk.

If helicopter operations are established correctly there is no reason why approaches cannot be made from the west, in over the sea and departures being made the same way and or from and to the south west, over open land and the sea.

When our helicopters (single and twin engined) flew in and out I noticed no problems with land or sea birds.

The via sea arrivals and departures may also be preferable routes to minimise noise.

On the matter of noise we and the operators of the office facility never had any complaints about our flights and noise, indeed many local residents used to come out and watch.

Also, when there was helicopter joy-riding from the site (operated by another company), many residents enjoyed local flights.

As to fire/crash services, it will only be necessary to have these available during the normal operating hours of the landing site.

As to a fuel truck being dangerous – most helicopters are turbine (jet) powered and jet fuel is like diesel and is very safe with a high flash point. You can put a match in and it will not ignite. Consequently Portland residents have little worry about these aspects.

Finally, there should be no problems with air traffic density. The busiest period for helicopter operations is likely to be during the Olympic two weeks and during that period it will be easy for the operator to have an advisory air-traffic control facility to ensure safety.

Outside of that period I doubt we will see a couple of movements in and out a week, let alone per hour. Hardly busy and hardly causing problems to anybody.

We need this type of facility in our community to aid businesses and thus help ensure our children’s futures. Let’s get on with it!
