A DRIVER is warning motorists to be vigilant after thieves targeted her in her car.

Kim Dennick, 53, was waiting to cross a Dorchester roundabout when two men walked up to the side of her vehicle.

The Littlemoor resident said one of the men looked directly at her handbag on the passenger seat. Mrs Dennick had her doors locked and the radio on loud so couldn’t tell if the men tried to open the doors.

The incident happened while she was on her way to work at around 8am at Top O’ Town roundabout.

The mother-of-two would like to warn others to be aware and lock their doors while driving.

Mrs Dennick, who works as a PA for Dorset Primary Care Trust (PCT) based at Vespasian House in Dorchester, said: “I was at the roundabout waiting to pull out and so I was looking all the time to the right.

“A gap appeared so I looked back to see if I could go and there was a bloke stood looking at me in front of the car and a bloke stood by the passenger door looking in. My handbag was on the passenger’s seat but I had the radio on so I don’t know if anyone tried to open the door.

“I learned to drive when I was 18 and living in Birmingham so I’ve always locked the doors when I drive.”

She urged other drivers to be more vigilant and lock their doors while driving.

Mrs Dennick said: “Talking to friends and people I know, I don’t think many people do lock their doors. It was a bit scary even for me and I am pretty tough – I don’t scare easily.

“But for a younger girl it could have been far worse.

“Having your handbag stolen is awful too – your whole life is in your handbag.”

Mrs Dennick said she sent an email to the local PCT offices warning staff members and one woman replied saying she had a similar experience.

She added: “This girl didn’t report it but many people wouldn’t because it’s difficult to report a non-incident that hasn’t actually happened.

“But I wanted to warn people about it because if something does happen and I hadn’t said anything then I’d feel like I should have said something.”

Dorset Police said they had no record of the incident or similar incidents.
