REGARDING the Weymouth Transport Package and the sweeping statement by the Cabinet Member for Transport (April 14) that traffic lights are necessary, it is premature and ill-founded.

There seems little evidence that the intelligent traffic lights are any better, faster or in particular, any safer than the roundabout systems that were so popular.

And there seems so little enthusiasm from the powers that be to respond to serious suggestions put forward.

I suggest just one item to be changed of the many I could think of: allow traffic going down Boot Hill under a green light to turn left into Wyke Road or Chickerell Road if they so desire.

It wouldn’t make a scrap of difference to the traffic flow down Boot Hill and could even improve it.

Just take away the recently erected causeway area.

No other changes are needed except perhaps to move the pedestrian crossings on Wyke Road and Chickerell Road a little further away from the junctions.

What a difference that would make to the Faircross/Everest Road rat run.

What a journey saving it would be.

Would it be all that world shaking to make the small change?

Incidentally, isn’t it good to see a new face appear over the parapet instead of Matthew Piles constantly taking all the flack?
