I would like to congratulate the bright spark(s) who designed the flags on the multitude of flag poles that have suddenly sprung up on Portland.

I am no weather man but have lived here long enough to know that the majority of winds that hit the island throughout the year come from the west or south west.

For this reason, why have the flags been designed so that when coming on to the island you can’t read what they say.

They have been up for three days now and it is only when you leave the island you are greeted with ‘Welcome to Portland. Home of team GB sailing’ or words to that effect.

Surely you should be welcoming people as they come on to the island and not going off.

That said, I seem to remember flags were put on the lampposts on the causeway some time ago and they lasted all of a week. I hope these new ones last longer.
