RAIL fares in Dorset will be hit by fare increases of up to eight per cent in January.

It comes after an announcement by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond this week who said the hike in prices nationally were necessary in order to fund railway improvements.

A spokeswoman for South West Trains confirmed that all regulated fares – such as season tickets, off peak returns and on-the-day tickets – would increase.

And South West Trains said it would be reviewing how much to charge for the non-regulated fares such as advanced fares. The hike in prices followed the release of July’s Retail Price Inflation(RPI) of five per cent and on top of that the Government raised controlled fares by three per cent.

The controlled fares have previously been set at one per cent.

Mr Hammond said the extra money will be invested in improvements, including 2,700 new carriages and line electrification.
