A MAJOR scheme to build 29 flats in Weymouth has finally got the go-ahead from planners.

The controversial development by Lomond Homes to demolish BEC Carpets and Beds in Lower St Alban Street to make way for the flats has already been refused several times.

But yesterday's meeting of Weymouth and Portland planning and traffic committee backed the scheme after hearing that two areas of dispute had been ironed out.

There had been conflict over the open space provision with the council requiring a £50,000 contribution while Lomond wanted to pay less.

More conflict centred on how the affordable housing element of the development should be divided, but the meeting heard this had now been set at seven units for rent and two for shared ownership.

Councillors unanimously backed the scheme but with the safety net that if a Section 106 agreement covering the cash and unit definition could not be agreed within a 13-week period then Lomond's application would be refused.
