Firstly, I am not the Mike Joslin that Bob Williams (‘Borough is not really a cul-de-sac’, Your Say, August 24) thinks. However, I am pleased to learn from Bob after 30 years that I can now travel from Dorchester via Weymouth to either Wareham or Bridport.

It never occurred to me to do so, thank goodness, which has avoided me spending the equivalent of several months of my life queuing up in my car at the seaside.

Conversely however, future generations visiting Dorchester from the east or west should definitely come via Weymouth.

The traffic congestion there may be a distinct drawback but woe betide them if they attempt to take the direct route to Dorchester. They will get a shock when they try to find the Dorchester park and ride near the county town. It will be at Weymouth!

Without foreknowledge, they will unintentionally be committing themselves to three visits to Dorchester and two visits to Weymouth before their day is out!

They will also get two round trips instead of one on which to experience the new Relief Road even if they may not get much sense of relief at the time it will take.

Of course, if my plan to reduce the speed on this to 25mph is adopted (I have revised this upwards following a reader’s suggestion), future visitors might find they are still in time to get the best bargains at the Wednesday market.

I find that in these hard times, a sense of humour goes a long way to mitigate the effects of stupidity. What a relief!
