FANS of soul singer Lemar were left ‘angry and disappointed’ after being left waiting for hours to see him perform.

Audiences felt let down by their hero who appeared for only 35 minutes during a four-hour event billed as an ‘Evening with Lemar’.

The star of BBC reality show Fame Academy went on stage almost three hours after the event started at 10pm.

A DJ with support singing acts performed for around 150 people in the Ocean Rooms at Weymouth Pavilion Complex before the Mobo and Brit award winner appeared around 12.45am.

Dozens of angry fans bombarded the Pavilion with complaints following the show.

A Pavilion spokesman apologised to fans who felt the event had not lived up to their expectations Those who have followed the star’s career since he came third in the BBC talent competition in 2002 said the singer’s performance was below his usual high standard due to poor sound.

Fan Kerry Burt said: “I don’t know whether it’s because we are a small town or what but for him to turn up and not sound check, for fans it was an insult.”

Kerry’s sister Amy Cotterell, 23, said: “I was really disappointed with the night, I’ve followed his whole career since Fame Academy and have got all his albums and know all the words to his songs.

“I knew he would not be on for the full four hours but didn’t realise he wouldn’t be there until quarter to one. He sang great but the sound wasn’t working properly.”

Another disappointed fan was Kay Hearson of Weymouth.

She claimed the event, which was billed as An Evening with Lemar’, should have read ‘An evening with a DJ and a warm-up vocalist plus a guest appearance from Lemar’.

She said: “I felt so disappointed by the whole evening.

“On the way out of the Pavilion there was an echo of disappointment as other people were complaining.”

A fan who wanted to stay anonymous said she felt the evening was not worth the money.

She said: “It was absolutely shocking. We got there at 9.30pm when the doors were opening but nothing happened until 10.45pm when the DJ started.

“We kept asking when Lemar was coming on when we got there and were told 11pm, and then at 11pm we got told midnight and then at midnight, one o’clock.”

Lemar’s tour manager, Terence Brown, said: “Maybe people are complaining about the time but if someone states a time for the artist’s performance we meet that time.

“We were on time and fulfilled our agreement.

“The ticket should say when the artist is on so there is not that misunderstanding.”

Weymouth Pavilion complex is owned and run by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

A spokesperson for the Pavilion said Lemar’s 35-minute performance on Saturday was part of a relaxed club night with supporting acts and DJs.

She said: “We are very sorry if Saturday’s event didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations.

“The event was advertised in advance as running from 10pm to 2am and Lemar stayed on after his performance to sign autographs and have photos taken with fans.

“However, a number of people have commented that the format of the evening could have been clearer and we will make sure this happens if we run this type of event at Weymouth Pavilion Complex in the future.”
