I find M Griffiths’ letter, ‘Looking Rundown’ (Dorset Echo – Monday 14th November, 2011) most frustrating.
I wonder when people will stop blaming the council for all our problems?
We all should take a stronger role in developing a sense of community that respects the local environment.
I would point to the example of Wyke Gardens on Portland Road as a wonderful example of a community gathering together to take ownership and responsibility.
The result of this, whether you call it a ‘big society’ movement or not, is a beautiful area that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
As for comparing Portland to a ‘second/third world area’, I would urge M Griffiths to visit a third world country and explain to people who truly live in poor conditions what Portland is like.
I strongly suspected these remarks would then be considered ‘regrettable’. I wonder how many of us actually stop to think how lucky we are?
