LAUREN Killham has been turning heads for the past few weeks – by sporting a moustache.

And while the facial hair may be fake her quest could not be more real.

Lauren, 21, of Cromwell Road, Weymouth, has worn a different fake moustache every day for the past three weeks to raise money and awareness for men’s health as part of the Movember initiative.

The 21-year-old joins her male colleagues at Ultra Electronics who support the cause every year.

“At home, at work and in public, no one has seen me leave my house without a moustache on my face for two weeks now,” said the admin assistant.

“So far I have been to a wedding reception, gone to London to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers, to the supermarket, into the town centre, into work and up to Plymouth.

“Every place I have been this month I have had a moustache on.”

So far the group has raised more than £600 in sponsorship to help charities involved with prostate cancer and other cancers affecting men.

Lauren said: “I lost my great uncles Bob Lucas and Jim Carlton to prostate cancer.

“They both had clear symptoms but didn’t go in for the exam.

“I feel if more awareness and funding were behind this charity then things may not have gone the same way.”

The late Weymouth Football Club president and stalwart, Bob Lucas, lost his battle against prostate cancer on August 12, 2010, aged 85.

“A woman wearing a moustache is likely to draw more attention and questions than if a man grows one,” said Lauren.

“It has been tough but it is all worth it if it means that awareness is raised about this disease.”

Movember was invented in Australia and is a month-long fundraising event Down Under for men’s health issues, in particular, prostate cancer. She added: “People laugh when I walk down the street and then ask why I’m wearing a moustache, which is the whole point.

“When I tell them what I’m doing a lot of them donate to the cause on the spot.

“I have over two weeks left and I will continue to wear my moustaches proudly.”

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and the second most common cause of cancer death.

Health professionals advise men to get screened for the cancer every four years.
