The takeover of the park and ride is merely the latest example of an apparent contempt for ordinary holidaymakers and ordinary holiday businesses demonstrated by the Olympic Delivery Authority and their yes-men in our local authorities.

For decades the foundation of tourism in Weymouth has been the ordinary holidaymaker. From mid-September 2012 onwards the Olympics will have been and gone and once again we shall need those ordinary holidaymakers for the future of our holiday parks, hotels, B&Bs, campsites, cafes and attractions.

A major part of our local economy is largely dependent on tourism, let us not pretend otherwise.

The advertisements by the agencies involved in the Olympics seemed calculated to dissuade ordinary tourists from visiting Weymouth in 2012. Indeed they have succeeded, a number of regular visitors have informed me that they will not be coming to Weymouth in 2012 because of the Olympics. That is, not coming at all in 2012 rather than not coming during the Olympics. Some visitors have also been discouraged by all the roadworks. We must hope that they return in 2013 and onwards.

I have always been 100 per cent in favour of the Olympics here.

However, it now seems more than possible that the Olympics legacy for many here will just be another difficulty when the economy is already in trouble, plus expensive park and ride and intelligent traffic lights system to maintain into the future. There seems to be a blind assumption that tourism will automatically benefit from an Olympics legacy into 2013 and beyond but no plan whatsoever to make this happen. The consequences for the local economy could be serious, especially so for ordinary tourism businesses.
