A NEW ‘befriending service’ has been launched to help elderly and isolated people living on Portland.

The Island Community Action (ICA) scheme Helping Hands is run entirely by volunteers and offers companionship to those who need it.

Volunteers are available for regular visits, either for a cup of tea and a chat, to accompany people on walks or to local activities or even to sit and play cards or read a book.

They can also run practical errands like collecting a prescription, helping with shopping or assisting with correspondence. Katy Pascoe, ICA project manager said: “The service is free of charge and is being delivered by a wonderful group of local people who have offered their own time.”

All ICA volunteers have been reference and police checked, interviewed, received training and are fully insured.

Anyone needing a ‘Helping Hand’ can call ICA on 01305 823789.
