The great and the good have been recognised in the Queen's New year Honours announced today. Tireless charity workers. community volunteers and an Antarctic scientist are among those honoured.

CHRISTIAN Jacobs, from Frome St Quinton near Dorchester, was also recognised with an MBE for his services to scientific research in the Antarctic.

He has spent much of the last 16 years at the extreme southern end of the world working as a mechanic helping to facilitate expeditions from a base at Union Glacier.

Christian, 43, spends October to February working for Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions.

Lady Rachel Mary Billington of Sherborne received an OBE for services to literature.

And there were MBEs for Wareham councillor Eric Osmond for services to the community; Mrs Audrey Beall of Wimborne for voluntary service to the the Motor Neurone Disease Association; Philip Burton for services to the community in Leigh and Sarah Dummer-Wade, Founder and chief executive, Rerun, Dorset Runaways' Service.
