Having just read Colin Dawe’s synopsis (Your Say, January 2) on the proposed sale of Weymouth’s old fire station, I must admit I’m more than a little puzzled as to the rights and wrongs of this.

Let me clarify. Any person or company who wishes to upgrade their property to a multi-million pound establishment would first have to dispose of their present dwelling for the best price possible.

That is of course, unless they are awash with money.

As far as I can determine, council tax payers finance the daily running costs of the fire and rescue service, so would it be impertinent of me to inquire where they got the funds to move to their sumptuous new premises?

The reason I ask is that it appears they have retained possession of their old premises and are now negotiating a nearly £2million sale of the same.

On top of this they apparently have plans to further upgrade their new premises.

Having no wish to be the ‘wet blanket’ to douse the flames of their ambitions, I think it is only right to point out that for thousands of pensioners, council tax is the biggest drain on their income.

So, in the interest of fairness, any money from this sale should be handed to the council to be used to offset future running costs.
