TWO sports areas in Weymouth will be turned into giant campsites for the Olympics.

Weymouth College Sports Centre and Redlands Community Sports Hub are among the latest campsites announced by a company offering budget accommodation for the Games.

Weymouth College, which operate the Redlands site, says it will benefit by using profits to improve facilities and to develop and nurture sport in the local community, thus keeping the Olympic legacy alive long after the Olympic torch has gone out.

It says that locals will not be disadvantaged and that people will be able to carry on using the facilities at both sites during the Games.

Both sites will be using a temporary campsite licence, valid for a month each.

The Weymouth College site in Cranford Avenue, will be the primary site for the Olympic sailing events, while Redlands Community Sports Hub in Dorchester Road, will then take precedence for the Paralympic sailing events.

Director of operations at Weymouth College Kieren Hasler said: “Obviously the number of campers depends on the demand but we’re looking to have about 100 to 150 up at both Redlands and the college.

“The college campsite would be situated at the back of Lodmoor car park.

“We’ve got an area behind the football pitch that’s used for training where we can accommodate tents without disrupting any of our normal sporting activities.

“Same with Redlands, we’ll be using areas around the sports pitches, like we did when we had the Hockey festival, so all normal sports can continue.”

He added: “All the extra money made will be invested back into the students – we are just looking at how to best make an ongoing legacy from the Olympics.”

Duty manager at Redlands, Brendan Black said: “It’s definitely good to be involved in the Games.

“We can accommodate a fair few tents here, I’m not sure what the plans are but I believe we’ll be offering kitchen facilities at Redland’s bar.

“Members of the public will still be able to use facilities.”

Campingninja, the company behind the Camping at the Games scheme, says that both Redlands and the college are within easy walking distance of the ticketed Olympic viewing area Nothe Gardens and the free Live Site on Weymouth Beach.

Each campsite will offer hot showers and parking, as well as a variety of events, entertainment, barbecues, and breakfasts for £10 per night per adult, and £5 per night per child.

Other new community sports sites across the country that will be hosting campsites include Eton Manor Rugby Club, Surbiton Hockey Club, Reading Rugby Club, Blackheath Rugby Club and Wodson Park.

Volunteers, who are not expected to receive confirmation on where they will be based until closer to the Games, will be able to swap sites.
