Weymouth firefighters to teach residents to cook safely

Weymouth firefighters and community safety staff are asking people to get a pancake for a pound whilst learning about cooking safely.

Next week is National Chip Week, and incorporates Shrove Tuesday.

This year fire crews want to use this opportunity to urge all pancake chefs and chip lovers to take care when they indulge.

In 2011, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service attended 442 accidental dwelling fires, 269 of these started in the kitchen, resulting in 10 casualties.

Weymouth community safety centre coordinator, Andy Fowler said: “We want to use these two cooking related events to raise awareness of the dangers of cooking and remind people how to cook safely.

“FireWise is an innovative and compelling learning opportunity where the visitor experiences realistic fire scenarios to help them learn how to keep themselves safe.”

The café at the station, which is run by Dorset County Council’s Oh Crumbs team, will be open for pancakes between 9am and 3.30pm on Tuesday.
