THE whole of Dorchester is being invited to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a party in the Borough Gardens.

On Tuesday, June 5 a theme of ‘celebrating through the years’ will run through the day with music, films and pictures from the six decades of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign on show.

Bands will entertain the crowds, with film footage from the decades being played in between.

Organisers are hoping the whole community will get involved and donate their old pictures, videos and clothes to make the day extra special.

Molly Rennie, who is a Dorchester town councillor and chairman of the activities panel, said it would be a day to remember.

She said: “It will be a huge party.

“We want as many young people to be involved as possible as well as those who remember the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.”

Organisers are hoping to join forces with community groups to make the event open to all parts of the community.

Coun Rennie said: “The Borough Gardens will be open all day.

“We are urging people to get involved and be part of the whole day.

“Because, whether you bring a table and chairs or a rug and a picnic, how lovely would it be to be totally involved in the day?

“We want everybody to celebrate together.”

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration will use infrastructure and gazebos from the Dorchester Festival which will run the weekend before.

Coun Rennie said that organisers were looking for pictures, video and any other vintage memorabilia that they could borrow on the day.

She said: “What would be marvellous is if we can find enough clothes from different eras and have a fashion show.

“It would be lovely if people have vintage clothes if they could contact us and let us know.

“If people work in a charity shop and if people bring in vintage items it would be great if they could let us know and maybe let us borrow them for the day.”

She added: “We are appealing to people for their film and stills of Dorchester life across the last 60 years.”

Anyone with pictures, films or vintage clothes who would like to get involved can contact Dorchester Town Council on 01305 266861.

Wide variety of celebrations

PLANS to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Bridport are to include tree planting, a picnic, commemorative bench and beacon lighting.

The Woodland Trust has given the Allington Hillbillies – a volunteer group that looks after Allington Hill – enough trees to plant a Jubilee Wood.

Amongst the trees will be a special Royal Oak that has been grown from an acorn from one of the Royal estates.

The Allington Hill volunteer group says the trees are being planted on Saturday, March 17 at 2pm but 100 volunteers are needed to help plant them.
