I would like to comment on Margaret Morrissey’s letter: ‘Man suffers from the abuse of few’ (Have Your Say) in which she states the people and traders of Dorchester need to consider a vote of no confidence in West Dorset District Council.
The trouble with WDDC, stems, from the fact that it is run by one party executive.
Decisions are made by the executive and then rubber stamped by the full council.
The same can be said of Dorset County Council; run by a cabinet, again one party, again Tory representatives.
I have attended both as an observer and find them totally undemocratic.
The system needs reforming and the best solution is to revert to ‘all party’ (including independents) committees which scrutinise and discuss thoroughly the issues.
These are then put to full council meetings for votes and agreements.
This means that a fair representative view of members of the community are heard and avoid the one-sided views of the cabinet or executive being railroaded through.
Until such reforms are carried out I despair for the future of democracy for the people of Dorchester and Dorset.
Margaret Morrissey asks if we need to change the people who run WDDC.
The answer is yes, unless they can change the undemocratic ways the councils are run.
