Dorchester’S dedicated band of anti-litter campaigners have been out and about cleaning up the town again.

Members of the Stop the Drop group filled twelve bags of rubbish when they carried out litter picks around Great Western Road.

The team had previously found it impossible to clear up the area around the former Focus DIY store but had been blocked by dense and prickly shrubbery.

Stop the Drop contacted The Range, which is moving into the Focus store, and they agreed to cut back the foliage so the litter pickers could get in there.

After initially collecting four bags of rubbish before the site was cleared, they returned and collected another eight bags.

Among the rubbish was dozens of beer, spirit and cider bottles, sweet wrappers and even an unopened pack of Marks and Spencer sausages.

As well as writing to the chief executive of The Range to thank him for his assistance, Stop the Drop will also be writing to West Dorset District Council to ask them to provide a rubbish bin outside the Hub centre for the homeless and urge users to dispose of their litter responsibly.

Felicity McLaren of Stop the Drop said: “We do wish the council and the police enforce litter legislation in an effort to create a cleaner Dorchester.”
