CHAINS were passed to the new chamber chief.

Anna-Maria Geare assumed the role of president of the Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce from outgoing president Andy Cooke.

The handover took place at the chamber’s AGM at the Royal Dorset Yacht Club in Weymouth.

Lloyds TSB commercial manager Mrs Geare said she was looking forward to being president during the Olympic year.

She said: “I am so pleased to be elected as president for 2012, a summer in which the eyes of the world will be on the UK and, in part, on us here in Weymouth and Portland.

“However, in the same way as ‘one swallow doesn’t make a summer’, neither does ‘one summer make a town.’”

Mrs Geare has been a member of the chamber for eight years. She said the Chamber will offer as much support as possible for businesses during a tough economic climate.

“In the current difficult economic climate our businesses need support both financially and from each other. “Through dialogue with local government, other business bodies and other Chambers, we will continue to support campaigns to improve our town centre, our industrial parks and our businesses.”

She added that the Chamber will act on its plans and the executive committee will play an important role in coordinating the action. Mrs Geare has been involved in organising monthly chamber and Lloyds TSB breakfast meetings.
