Before we get too excited about superfast broadband for Portland (Echo, February 6), I am with Orange who have told me this morning that ‘BT won’t yet let us use the fibre-optic cables’.

Orange (and no doubt other providers) ‘have no plans to upgrade their equipment in the local exchanges’.

The statement by Openreach makes no mention of which ISPs can now provide the sky-high speeds, or what one has to do to get them, or what additional cost is involved.

In the meantime our line at Weston still has a maximum speed of 3.5MB/s.

Some clarification is needed.
